WATCH: Norah O'Donnell's Big Debut

$
0
0
“I am not a fan of that phrase,” “CBS This Morning” co-host Norah O’Donnell said when she was asked the perennial question, “Can women have it all?”

Though it's a cliche, the "having it all" issue is an inevitable one, because O'Donnell has secured the first television interview with Sheryl Sandberg, the Facebook executive whose new book Lean In has captivated the attention of the media and of women across the country. The interview will air on Sunday's "60 Minutes"— O'Donnell's first-ever time on the prestigious show.

Sandberg's thesis — that women are unintentionally holding themselves back in the workplace — has been met with a wave of criticism from those who argue that the COO is elitist or even blaming women instead of institutionalized sexism. Others have defended Sandberg as a staunch feminist and said the book is well worth reading.

In the "60 Minutes" profile, Sandberg pushes back at her critics. “My message is not one of blaming women. There is an awful lot we don’t control,” she says. “There is an awful lot we can control and we can do for ourselves to sit at more tables, raise more hands.”

Profiling Sandberg for “60 Minutes” was a project “long in the works,” O’Donnell told The Huffington Post during an interview at the CBS News headquarters on Thursday. When she joined CBS News as a White House correspondent in the summer of 2011, the network announced that she would also serve as the substitute host to Bob Schieffer on “Face the Nation” and a contributor to “60 Minutes.” Within the first couple of months of her arrival, O’Donnell pitched a number of stories to the newsmagazine, including a profile on Sandberg.

“They said, ‘Great. Sounds like a great story, but see if you can get the interview,” O’Donnell said. She approached Sandberg as the company was preparing to launch its IPO, but Facebook did not want to speak to the press at the time. “I had no idea that she had a book coming out,” O’Donnell said of the time she first approached Sandberg. But the exclusive interview surrounding her book release came as a result of her initial request a year and a half ago.

O’Donnell described Sandberg’s Lean In as a “sort of feminism 2.0 moment.” She added, “I think Sheryl is delivering a pretty blunt message that is, ‘The revolution has stalled.’ And that’s a message I don’t think people want to hear … I think her take is that it’s not just sexism anymore. It’s an ambition gap when it comes to women who want to lead. And I think that's a really profound argument.”

O’Donnell mentioned research that Sandberg discusses as well – that women have been getting more college degrees than men for 30 years, but make up just barely over 4 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs.

When asked where the glass ceiling exists in her own industry, O’Donnell pointed to the executive suite and roles behind the camera. “I still think we’re waiting for a women president of a news organization, so there’s a glass ceiling there. And I think there can be more parity in terms of women in executive positions, whether that's in management or in production,” she said. NBC, where O'Donnell previously worked for 12 years, happens to have an opening. Longtime NBC News president Steve Capus announced his departure earlier this year and the network has not yet named his replacement.

There's a certain sense of irony about this moment for O'Donnell. Her story on Sandberg about factors preventing women from excelling in the workplace is the very interview that will introduce her to audiences on what many industry professionals consider the most coveted of all broadcast news programs. “It was one of the things that when I was making a decision about my next career move, I really wanted to do ‘60 Minutes,’” O’Donnell said. “So that has long been a dream, that was part of my decision to come to [CBS] two years ago.”

CBS News chairman Jeff Fager “promises” that audiences will see O’Donnell on “60 Minutes” again. “She has all the right skills to be successful with us, and mostly because she’s a real reporter who knows how to do interviews," he said. "That’s why you will see her again on 60 Minutes, and why she’s such an important part of 'CBS This Morning' every single day.”

After spending a year as the network’s White House correspondent, O’Donnell was named co-host of “CBS This Morning” alongside Charlie Rose and Gayle King. Though the show has far fewer hosts than its direct competitors, the program boasts the best gender ratio of all the morning shows—2:1. Ratings for the two-year-old show are also up double digits in both total viewers and the 25-54 age demographic compared to last year’s February sweeps, just one month after the show launched with Rose, King and O'Donnell's predecessor, Erica Hill.

CBS has gone through multiple revamps of morning shows in recent years and has long been in third place behind NBC’s “Today” and ABC’s “GMA.” But the broadcast and cable morning show landscape has been hit with major changes since O’Donnell joined “CBS This Morning” in August 2012. "GMA" has gained a newfound dominance over "Today" and CNN is in the process of re-launching its morning show yet again.

“Every minute counts,” executive producer Chris Licht, who also serves as CBS News’ vice president of programming, said. “People are sampling different shows more than ever, so we treat every segment and every guest as an
opportunity to grab – or lose—a viewer.”

O'Donnell's interview with Sandberg could be one of those opportunities, as the book sparks what O'Donnell described as an at-times polarizing but necessary conversation. “Everybody has an opinion on this subject and it’s usually a strong opinion about women in the workplace, how to balance work and family, how women are treated in the workplace,” she said. “And people have fierce opinions on both sides of this ... There will be a lot of strong reactions.”

Work-life balance is a topic O’Donnell knows very well. She spoke candidly about feeling “embarrassed” that she had another child 13 months after having twins. She said she worried about being the “pregnant lady at work” and missing out on any opportunities. Instead, O’Donnell worked throughout her pregnancy and covered the 2008 Democratic primary.

“I was on set all day and at midnight [I was told] Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann … were tired and wanted to go home. So then the pregnant lady stayed on until 2 in the morning,” O’Donnell laughed.

She returned to work to cover the Democratic convention seven weeks after her third child was born. "I didn't want to miss out on any opportunities," she said. "So I think there was kind of a sense of guilt about that, but I don't have that anymore."

With a morning show and "60 Minutes" debut around the corner, the mother of three said she's not a fan of the "having it all" phrase because it boxes women in. "I think it sets up that there’s this singular 'Having It All' [and] that everybody has to fit into that ‘Having It All’ box," she said. "I think everybody should have a different sense of what success is." Reported by Huffington Post 21 hours ago.

Child Marriage On Rise As Global Crises Increase, New Study Says

$

Humaiya, a 16-year-old from Bangladesh, hasn't yet undergone the wedding rituals of having her eyes encircled with powder or her face covered with a gauzy gold and ruby veil. Her mother and her grandmother were both child brides, but the cycle has stopped with Humaiya.

Though her father wanted to marry her off at age 13, her mother and a group of advocates intervened, Humaiya told The Huffington Post. She says she knows she's lucky -- as of International Women's Day Friday, 13.5 million girls have been married before they turned 18, according to a new study by World Vision, an international charity.

"Women have no rights to give an opinion in the family," Humaiya said. "My father didn't listen."

Half of all girls living in the world's 51 least-developed countries have been married before the age of 18, according to the U.N. The World Vision study, released to coincide with International Women's Day on March 8, found that such marriages are on the rise due to an increase in global poverty and crises. Researchers highlighted that parents living in areas prone to political instability or natural disasters are more likely to marry off their daughters at a young age, largely due to fear from these crises. Children living in these areas, such as South Sudan or Somalia, are also more likely to be forced into child marriage, the study said.

Erica Hall, Child Rights Policy director at World Vision, explained that the root causes of child marriage -- poverty and gender inequality -- are being exacerbated.

"Worldwide, there are increases in security issues and increases in natural disasters linked to global warming," Hall said. She cited the recent humanitarian crisis in the Sahel region of North Africa and Somalia due to drought and political unrest as an example in which many girls often quit school and are sent to work as domestic workers or are married, to reduce the burden on their families.

For Bangladeshi families such as Humaiya's, drought and lack of food are the primary reasons to discharge a young girl from her home. One of the most unjust impacts of this is education inequality. World Vision's research in Bangaldesh revealed that girls who were unable to attend school due to disruptions from natural disasters were more likely to marry early.

Humaiya speaks out about child rights issues such as early marriage and became an advocate through World Vision, which introduced Humaiya to HuffPost. She said she knows that her ongoing education in Bangladesh is rare. Some 66 percent of girls in Bangladesh are married before age 18, according to World Vision. Humaiya works to educate her peers in her village and speaks to government leaders, asking them to do more to stem child marriage and provide greater education opportunities.

But Humaiya told The Huffington Post that she has seen many of her friends married off, and described how disconnected she feels from the girls she has been friends with for five or more years.

"Now they are good cooks," she said. "They are like my mother, even though we are the same age. I don't know how to manage a family, but they know."

She explained that her mother was 16 when she was forced to get married, and lost a son by the time she was 18 years old.

In Bangladesh, the law is that girls can't marry until they're 18 and boys can't marry until they're 21. But the rules are not implemented, Hall said.

"The law is not the problem," she pointed out. "You have to have political will to do that and capacity and understanding among law enforcement. The goal is to get governments to enforce these things, and -- this is such an NGO word -- but it has to be a holistic approach."

Hall pointed out that requiring marriage registration and working on a grassroots community level is key to creating systemic change. She cited examples such as the Grandmother's Project in southern Senegal, a nonprofit partner of World Vision that focuses on reducing early marriage, female genital mutilation and early pregnancy by creating an intergenerational dialogue about how to shift the gender-role paradigm.

"That's been successful -- you know how grandmothers are -- in getting an idea like that across that it doesn't have to be part of the tradition," Hall said.

World Vision also works with religious leaders to address the practice of child marriage.

"There is a strong foundation in religion that children should be protected and they don't want girls dying in childbirth and these leaders say, 'This is a tenet of our faith and this is why we are going to start speaking out against it,'" Hall explained.

The issue of child marriage has gained momentum outside of the NGO world as well. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced last October a public-private initiative that focuses on ending child marriage by increasing education opportunities, providing training among officials and tracking every country's legal minimum age of marriage -- in particular in Humaiya's home country of Bangladesh. Four New Principals Will Be Hired This Year in West Hartford

Four New Principals Will Be Hired This Year in West Hartford Patch West Hartford, CT --

The search for new principals at four West Hartford schools is continuing, and announcements should soon be forthcoming for several of the positions.

A combination of factors has led to a large number of vacancies throughout the district, with interim administrators currently in place in principal and assistant principal roles.

"It's been a long time since this has happened," said Executive Director of Employee Services Rick Ledwith. "Typically it's much more staggered," he said.

The most recent opening is at *Braeburn Elementary School*, where long-time Principal Natalie Simpson announced on Feb. 25 that she would retire at the end of June.

"I’ve had the privilege of working closely with her throughout her career in our school district. She was a teacher at Norfeldt when I was the principal there and went on to become our curriculum specialist at Smith and succeeded me as Smith principal before moving to Braeburn. I have tremendous admiration for her passion, intellect, and diligence in every role she’s had. I will miss her informed, thoughtful, tenacious, and caring approach to school leadership. Children come first for Mrs. Simpson with high standards permeating all she touches. Mrs. Simpson is the model life-long learner," Superintendent Dr. Karen List wrote in a letter to the Braeburn community announcing Simpson's retirement.

The Braeburn position was posted on March 7.

At both Duffy and Hall, the process of hiring a new principal has been well underway for several months. Leadership profiles for each school, defining the leadership qualities, characteristics, and traits that the school communities' desire in the next principal, were developed during December and January.

At *Duffy*, the position was posted from January through early February, and 57 applications were received, Ledwith said. The first round of interviews was conducted by a committee chaired by Wolcott Elementary School Principal Dr. Plato Karafelis, and including staff members Marilyn Holcomb, Sheila Levanti, Hannah Shapiro, Elona Judd, and parents Jennifer Majewski (PTO president) and Amy Boultbee Mackinnon (PTO first vice-president).

Following selection of finalists, the applicants' current school district is visited "to ensure we find the right person for this critical leadership position." Ledwith said that an announcement should be forthcoming within the next few weeks. The contract for the new principal will begin effective July 1.

Current Duffy Principal Kathleen Tracy announced in late July 2012 that she would resign as principal at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. A group of current and former parents at Duffy presented the Board of Education with a petition expressing a vote of no confidence in her leadership earlier in the summer.

Former Conard Principal Chuck Landroche has been working alongside Tracy at Duffy since the fall. Tracy plans to remain with the West Hartford Public Schools in some capacity following her departure from Duffy.

The hiring of a new principal at *Hall High School* is proceeding along a similar track. That position was open through mid-February, with 39 qualified applicants responding.

The interview committee at Hall is being chaired by Conard High School Principal Dr. Peter Cummings. Administrators Donna Namnoum and Steve Armstrong; teachers Tom Devine, Carol Blejwas, and Lauren Drazen; staff member Chris Bartolotta; parents Erica Bloch and Donna Dobbins; and student representative Kendall Teare also serve on the committee.

In a letter sent to the Hall community on March 4, Ledwith indicated that the first round of interviews was scheduled to begin, with the process of selecting a finalist taking several weeks. "If everything goes as scheduled we hope to conclude the process with an announcement to the Board of Education and the Hall community within three to four weeks" Ledwith wrote in the letter.

The vacancy in Hall's top position was created when Dr. Donald Slater resigned in September to take a job as Chief Operating Officer for Hartford's schools. Tom Einhorn has been serving as interim principal.

Applications for the job of principal at *Whiting Lane Elementary School* closed Monday, Ledwith said. Because the elementary schools are in the middle of CMTs, the interview process will take place beginning the third week of March, he said.

Karen Kukish, a former assistant principal at King Philip Middle School, has been serving in an interim role.

Dr. Nancy DePalma, the former principal of Whiting Lane, was named interim Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment in September when Dr. Eileen Howley announced that she would be taking a position as Executive Director of LEARN, the regional educational service center (RESC) in the southeast corner of the state. DePalma was officially named to the position in January.

Although the jobs are open to all qualified applicants, Ledwith said he expects internal candidates to be "strong candidates for our open positions." Reported by Patch 1 day ago.

Senators Remain Hush-Hush While Crafting Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON -- The eight senators meet in private several times a week, alternating between Sen. John McCain's and Sen. Charles Schumer's offices. They sit in arm chairs arranged in a circle and sip water or soft drinks as they debate temporary workers and border security. In a capital riven by partisanship and gridlock, they are determined to be the exception and actually get something done.

This is immigration reform's "Gang of Eight." With them lies the best hope in years for overhauling the nation's byzantine immigration laws – and they know it. That's partly why they are, by all accounts, working amazingly well together as a self-imposed deadline approaches for their sweeping legislation to be released. The progress is happening even though the group includes some of the Senate's most outsized personalities, failed and prospective presidential candidates, one lawmaker dogged by scandal and another facing a potential re-election challenge that could be complicated by his stance on immigration.

"I tell you what, this is one of the best experiences I've had. Everybody's serious, everybody's knowledgeable, they've been around the issue," said Sen. Lindsey Graham-R-S.C., who's up for re-election next year and facing a potential GOP primary challenge from the right. He said it's "sort of what I came up here to do – sit down with serious people to solve serious and hard problems."

In addition to McCain, R-Ariz., Schumer, D-N.Y., and Graham, the gang includes Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a potential 2016 presidential candidate; Dick Durbin, D-Ill.; Jeff Flake, R-Ariz.; Michael Bennet, D-Colo.; and Robert Menendez, D-N.J., who's battling allegations related to prostitution and his ties to one of his donors.

They meet for an hour or an hour-and-a-half at a time on days when the Senate is in session. No reporters stake out these meetings and aides stand or sit in the background, behind their bosses. They're assiduous about avoiding leaks and tight-lipped on the details of how their talks are going.

"I'm guardedly optimistic," McCain almost invariably says when asked.

McCain and Schumer sometimes take the lead in the meetings but others speak up as issues arise that are of special importance to them. Menendez has made family reunification a focus; Durbin has championed the cause of undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children. Graham and Schumer have jointly tried to help broker an agreement between business and labor over a program to bring future workers to the country, which several lawmakers said remains the toughest challenge.

The mood in the meetings varies between lighthearted and serious. McCain is given to ribbing Graham and others. Schumer appears to have developed a genuine fondness for both McCain and Graham. Mostly, there's a focus on getting a bill that can pass and become law, and the sessions are almost an oasis from the fights over the budget that have occupied Congress much of the year.

"It's nice to be in a room where people are actually trying to solve problems and accomplish something," said Bennet.

The legislation the group is working on would secure the border; provide a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants already in the country, contingent on a secure border first; crack down on employers; and improve legal immigration. Senators have indicated some consensus on elements related to border security and the path to citizenship. They are struggling on the question of legal immigration and future workers, and are trading proposals with leaders of the AFL-CIO and Chamber of Commerce to try to get a deal.

The senators have been working toward a self-imposed March deadline to release their legislation, although it now seems that might slip until they return from a two-week recess the second week of April. They would aim for a vote in the Judiciary Committee soon thereafter, then consideration by the full Senate and from there, the House. Success is far from assured and the process could fail at any point. Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., has so far given the group the time and space to complete their work though he's also signaled his patience is not infinite and he could bring up more liberal immigration legislation drafted by President Barack Obama if the Gang of Eight doesn't produce a bill.

The group came together when Graham phoned Schumer the weekend after the November election. Obama's resounding victory among Latino voters had just sealed his win and underscored to Republicans like McCain and Graham that the GOP needed to act on immigration. Schumer, McCain and Graham all are veterans of past failed attempts on the issue, most prominently in 2007 when legislation backed by then-President George W. Bush failed on the Senate floor.

Schumer later recounted that Graham said, "The band is back, let's do immigration" and told him McCain was on board. "And my heart went pitter patter," Schumer said in telling the anecdote at a breakfast hosted by Politico in January.

The senators worked to round up others. Flake said Schumer approached him during Congress' lame-duck session.

"I said I just always wanted to be part of a gang. I grew up in Snowflake, Ariz., the South side didn't offer much," Flake said.

Rubio had been shopping his own immigration proposals that dovetailed with what the senators were working on.

The Gang of Eight began working on drafting principles. They were forced to speed up their timetable when they learned Obama planned to announce his own proposals and they rolled out their blueprint at a packed news conference at the Capitol on Jan. 28. Since then they've had little to say publicly as they work toward releasing their bill, except to voice cautious optimism that this time they will finally succeed in solving a problem that has bedeviled Washington for decades.

"Everybody there wants to get it done and nobody's looking for political points or political advantage," Flake said. "Everybody's looking to get it done and that makes all the difference."

A.J. O'Brady's Prepping for Bigger St. Patrick's Day Bash

A.J. O'Brady's Prepping for Bigger St. Patrick's Day Bash Patch Menomonee Falls, WI --

Black Friday is to retailers as St. Patrick’s Day is to pubs, and A.J. O’Brady’s owner Bruce Russell is ready to throw a party on arguably the biggest annual event for the local Falls business.

As the only Irish pub and grill in Falls, A.J.’s has a reputation to uphold. Last year, Russell hosted the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the village – complete with an outdoor music tent and plenty of beer and corned beef.

This year, Russell plans to outdo last year’s celebration. Roughly 800 pounds of corned beef have been ordered, and 38 barrels of green beer are ready to be tapped on March 17. The outdoor, heated music tent is even a little bigger.

Russell said the most significant improvement from last year is the music lineup.

“That’s probably the most common feedback was that the music could have been better, and this year it will be,” Russell said.

Here’s the lineup for St. Patrick’s Day Weekend:

· Friday: Pat McCurdy and DJ Chamroc
· Saturday: Erica Hoyt, Liam Ford, Rebel Grace
· Sunday: Bad Medicine and the finals for “AJ’s Battle of the Bands” (The annual kilt contest will precede Bad Madicine)

With AJ’s Live open across the street, there will be more options for music there throughout the weekend. In fact, the musical talent has continued on an upward trend at A.J.'s since Bill O'Dwyer, lead singer of Chasin' Mason, became an investor in A.J.'s Live.

But St. Patrick’s Day also offers AJ’s an opportunity to give back to the community. On Friday, the 102.9 Hog Guys will be at the pub, and collections will be taken to benefit the Menomonee Falls Fire Department. The same night, they’ll also donation to the Optimist Club and Falls Chamber of Commerce from revenues in the heated tent.

“We said from the start of AJ’s that we always wanted to be a business that supports the local community and organizations,” Russell said. “We have a chance to do that in a big way this year once again.”

Most importantly, AJ’s has partnered with a local hotel and limousine service to provide lodging and transportation deals on the big night.

“Above all else, we want to make sure people are having a good time, but are doing it in a safe way,” Russell said.

AJ’s is also celebrating its second anniversary, and the party has already started. AJ’s is offering drink specials and free deals throughout the week. You can find more information by visiting AJ’s online. To learn more about tranposrtaion and lodging deals, give AJ’s a call at (262) 250-1095.

After St. Patrick’s Day March continues to roll full steam ahead into the NCAA Basketball Tournament, and right into Opening Day April 1.

“I’ve got my vaction booked starting April 2,” Russell said.  Reported by Patch 13 hours ago.

55 Years and Counting: Pops ’n Jazz Tradition Continues at Hall High School Patch West Hartford, CT --

**The 55th annual production of Pops 'n Jazz, featuring Hall High School's acclaimed jazz bands, dancers, and singers, opens March 15, with additional performances March 16, 21, 22 and 23. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and performances begin at 7:30 p.m.

Home of one of the nation’s top high school jazz programs, Hall High has produced the musical extravaganza known as Pops 'n Jazz since 1958, when the show was originated by former band director Bill Stanley. Hall was one of the first high schools in the United States to integrate jazz into its daily curriculum, and Hall students have performed around the world.

Pops ’n Jazz 2013 features more than 100 student performers, the school's Concert Jazz Band, Jazz Band, Jazz Dancers, and Choraliers (jazz singers). The program, which varies slightly each night, provides an array of American jazz classics from all eras, performed in big band and combo settings, highly choreographed jazz productions, and featured solo performances. The show offers an eclectic blend of music, ranging from traditional and progressive jazz to pop-rock and Broadway.

In addition to the student performances, invited guests from the ranks of professional musicians appear on selected evenings. This year, featured guests include *Joel Frahm* on March 16, *Scott Wendholt* on March 21 and *Gregg Kallor* on March 22. Participation of guest performers is supported by the Ellen Jeanne Goldfarb Memorial Charitable Trust.

Showcasing up-and-coming young talent from King Philip Middle School, there will be special performances by the KP Singers (March 15 and 23), Sixth Dimension (March 22) and the King Philip Jazz Band (March 21). On March 16, special recognition will be given to the Pops ’n Jazz Elementary All-Stars, which include students from Aiken, Whiting Lane, Bugbee, Norfeldt, Morley, and Smith elementary schools in West Hartford.

Pops ’n Jazz is produced by retired Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts, Haig Shahverdian, and Jazz bands are directed by John Mastroianni, Hall High’s Director of Bands. The Jazz Singers are under the direction of Vocal Director Lorri Cetto, the Jazz Dancers are under the direction of choreographer, Stephanie Simpson, and the stage crew and set construction are coordinated by Technical Director Brian Jacobs. Lighting design and staging are under the direction of Eileen Shahverdian. Costumes are coordinated by Kathy Kuckens and Judi Houpert.  Technical theatre and stagecraft students are responsible for set construction, as well as stage management, lighting and audio. Additional assistance is provided by Hall High parents, teachers and staff.

The West Hartford Public Schools have received the Kennedy Center Award for Excellence in Arts Education in recognition of their program. The Hall Concert Jazz Band has performed at the White House, has repeatedly been invited to the Essentially Ellington Competition at Lincoln Center, and has repeatedly won first place at the Berklee School of Music Jazz Festival in Boston. The Concert Jazz Band won the Downbeat award for “Best Big Band” for 2004-05. Hall’s Jazz Singers placed first at the 2003 Berklee Jazz Festival.

Hall Concert Jazz Band alumni include renowned jazz musicians Richie Barshay (drums), Joel Frahm (tenor sax), Brad Mehldau (piano), Erica von Kleist (alto sax), Peter McGuinness (trombone), Noah Preminger (tenor sax), Patrick Zimmerli (tenor sax), and Gregg Kallor (piano).

Through the years, the Concert Jazz Band has performed with some of the finest jazz artists in the world, including Phil Woods, Wynton Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Randy Brecker, Jimmy Heath, Bob Mintzer, Marvin Stamm, Dionne Warwick, Kurt Elling, Curtis Fuller, and the Count Basie and Woody Herman Orchestras.

Franey Medical Lab in Hyannis Allegedly Involved in Medicaid Kickback Scheme Patch Barnstable-Hyannis, MA --

The following is from a press release:

Dr. Richard Ng, 54, of Milton, the former director of a drug abuse clinic in Brighton between 2006 and 2008, was charged with 11 counts of Illegal Prescribing, nine counts of Medicaid False Claims, and seven counts of Medicaid Excess Charges, according to a statement from Attorney General Martha Coakley's office.

The clinic’s former office manager was also indicted for conducting an elaborate Medicaid kickback scheme worth more than $590,000. Franey Medical Lab in Hyannis was one of two labs involved in Medicaid kickback scheme.

Renee Andrews, 43, of Hudson, NH, was charged with four counts of Medicaid Kickbacks, two counts of Medicaid False Claims, and five counts of Private Health Insurance Kickbacks. As Ng’s former office manager, she allegedly offered and entered into Medicaid kickback arrangements with two laboratories including Franey Medical Lab, Inc. in Hyannis and East Side Clinical Laboratory in East Providence, RI.

In exchange for Ng’s significant urine drug screening business, the laboratories paid the salaries of some of Ng’s office staff, including the full-time salaries of Andrews’ daughter, nephew and boyfriend, who also worked as medical assistants and performed other administrative duties. The drug screens resulting from the kickbacks were worth more than $590,000 and were paid for by MassHealth, as well as Medicare and private insurances.

Franey Medical Lab was charged with one count of Medicaid Kickbacks, one count of Medicaid False Claims, and three counts of Private Health Insurance kickbacks.

Kathleen Franey-Lopes, 35, of Marstons Mills, was charged with one count of Medicaid Kickbacks, one count of Medicaid False Claims, and three counts of Private Health Insurance Kickbacks. Franey, the daughter of the lab’s owner, was the primary contact with Ng’s office  between March 2007 and March  2008.

The 48 indictments returned Thursday by a Suffolk Grand Jury against four defendants are the result of an industry-wide independent clinical laboratory investigation conducted by Attorney General Coakley’s Medicaid Fraud Division. The defendants will be summonsed for arraignment on April 4, 2013.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney Generals Toby Unger and Angela Neal, of Attorney General Coakley’s Medicaid Fraud Division, and Deputy Chief of the Medicaid Fraud Division Steven Hoffman.  The case was investigated by investigators Joseph Shea and Erica Schlain. This case was referred to the AG’s Office by MassHealth, who also assisted in the investigation. Reported by Patch 2 days ago.

New 'All My Children' Revival Details

"All My Children" star Julia Barr is reprising the role of Brooke English for the soap's online revival and is revealing new details about the show's rebirth.

However, the big question -- who was shot at the end of the ABC finale that aired in September 2011 -- will have to wait. "I’m sorry, I'm not at liberty to discuss what happened, but it’s actually a great opening script that lets you know a certain amount of things that happened and who they happened to," Barr told TVLine.

Look for "All My Children" to pick up five years after the ABC finale. "It’s really good. It’s approximately five years in the future as far as [the show] wanting to age some of the kids. Of course, the adults did not age, and I’m so glad," she said.

Barr will be joined by many former co-stars, including David Canary, Cady McClain, Eden Riegel, Darnell Williams, Debbi Morgan, Jill Larson, Thorsten Kaye and Lindsay Hartley. There are some new faces too, including Jordan Lane Price as Celia.

"They’re all terrific and so sweet," Barr told TVLine. "It’s very nice to have a mix of vets and newbies -- great energy."

Barr said expect surprises. "I was even surprised yesterday to hear about somebody that I’ll be working with on Thursday," she said.

One veteran who's not signed yet: Susan Lucci. Erica Kane is not a part of the "All My Children" revival ... as far as we know.

“I so hope that I can return," Lucci said during a late February appearance on "The View.""I want with all my heart to return to 'All My Children.' I just don't know the answer yet. But what I do know is that all of us -- all of us -- are working so hard to make that happen."

"All My Children" will return in the spring 2013.
