Pre-Order Soda Bread, Help Save Lives

Pre-Order Soda Bread, Help Save Lives Patch Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow, NY --

Tarrytown’s Tara Chillemi is saving lives one loaf at a time.

This self-proclaimed triathlon addict is fundraising for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society again, this time by way of Irish soda bread loaves she’s selling at the Sleepy Hollow St. Patrick’s Day parade.

She’ll have about 30 fresh-baked loaves there to sell on the parade route on Sunday, March 10 and is taking pre-orders (write to her at tarachillemi@gmail.com). Loaves are $10 each, all proceeds of which go to the LLS. Payments can be made through her Team in Training fundraising page at pages.teamintraining.org/wch/sleephol13/tarachillemi.

Chillemi writes:

I am raising funds for the Sleepy Hollow Sprint Triathlon through LLS's Team in Training program, an endurance training program that helps prepare individuals for marathons, century bike rides, triathlons, swims, and hikes while raising funds for blood cancer research, patient care, and awareness. This year I am part of a community team called "Ladies and the Tramp." The team consists of Allison Marks, Erica Lofaso, Christina Delfino, Joanna Kelly, and Al Ruiz (the lone male). We started training together last year for the Sprint Tri and bonded throughout the experience. We continued to train together and training then turned into friendships.

I was just joking when I asked if it was Grandma’s recipe she was using, but sure enough…

The recipe I use is my Grandma's family recipe from County Clare. I learned how to make soda breads from my Grandma when I was little. My Grandma lived with us and she would call me down to her apartment once March came to start making soda breads. At first, she would sit next to me and my sisters and show us each set of the recipe. As the years went on, we took over the process of making the breads and my Grandma would watch. I continue to make soda breads the way she taught me as a way to remember her (she passed away in July of 2007).

The ingredients are simple and assembled with love:

· flour
· sugar
· cream of tartar
· salt
· butter
· eggs
· buttermilk
· raisins
· eggs
· baking soda

No machines are used to create the loaves, she notes.

CTA Hiring 200 More Ex-Cons For Apprentice Program

*Story by Erica Demarest, courtesy DNAinfo Chicago:*

HUMBOLDT PARK — The CTA on Wednesday announced plans to quadruple its apprenticeship program for ex-convicts, adding 200 paid positions in the coming year.

“If you want to make sure that an ex-offender does not become a repeat offender, you have to have job opportunities for them to prove themselves,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who announced the expansion from a CTA bus facility in Humboldt Park.

The program allows ex-offenders who have had “nonviolent brushes with the law” to train for nine months or one year at $9.50 per hour, CTA President Forrest Claypool said. Typical duties include cleaning or servicing equipment.

Senate Republicans Dine With Obama

$

BY JULIE PACE, ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON — Shifting course in the face of political gridlock, President Barack Obama is making rare overtures to rank-and-file Republicans, inviting GOP senators to dinner Wednesday, planning visits to Capitol Hill and working the phones with lawmakers.

Obama's efforts are aimed at jumpstarting budget talks and rallying support for his proposals on immigration and gun control.

The president's new charm offensive underscores the limitations of his earlier attempts to use public pressure, rather than direct engagement, to win Republican cooperation. That strategy proved futile in recent weeks, as the White House and Congress failed to prevent $85 billion in automatic budget cuts that both sides said they wanted to avoid.

As that "sequester" has started taking effect, Obama has begun quietly calling congressional Republicans to discuss the prospects for an elusive longer-term deficit reduction deal as well as his other second-term priorities. Aides say Obama is concentrating his outreach on lawmakers with a history of bipartisan deal-making and those who have indicated some willingness to support increased tax revenue as part of a big deficit-cutting package.

In both his calls and dinner invitations, the president pointedly has skipped over Sen. Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner, the GOP leaders who insist that Obama will get no further tax hikes from Capitol Hill.

Republicans have had mixed reactions to the outreach from the president, who previously has shown little appetite for personal engagement with lawmakers, often preferring to assign those efforts to his staff and Vice President Joe Biden.

"He's never spent anytime reaching out," said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., who spoke with the president this week about gun legislation. "The question is, is it starting to change because there is bad poll numbers or is it because he really decided he's going to lead and solve some of the problems of the country?"

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a frequent critic of the White House on national security issues, said he was encouraged by Obama's efforts.

"This is how you solve hard problems," the South Carolina Republican said.

It was during a phone call with Graham this week that the president raised the prospect of a group dinner with Republican lawmakers, an Obama aide said. Graham agreed to put together a guest list.

Along with Graham and Coburn, the lawmakers at Wednesday's dinner were Sens. John McCain, Kelly Ayotte, Pat Toomey, Bob Corker, Ron Johnson, Saxby Chambliss, John Hoeven, Dan Coats, Richard Burr and Mike Johanns. The two-hour dinner took place on neutral territory - the Jefferson Hotel, a few blocks from the White House.

A White House official said Obama had a good exchange of ideas with the lawmakers, but offered no specifics on what was discussed. The president picked up the tab for dinner, the White House said.

McCain, responding to a reporter's question about how the dinner went, jokingly said "terrible," then added that the meal went "just fine."

Obama has often scoffed at the notion that calling or meeting with Republicans more frequently would soften the ground for substantive negotiations on fiscal issues and other matters.

"I think a lot of folks say, `Well, if we look like we're being too cooperative or too chummy with the president that might cause us problems,'" Obama said, referring to the Republicans, in January. "`That might be an excuse for us to get a challenge from somebody in a primary.'"

The Republicans joining Obama for dinner may be less concerned with the political implications of sitting down with the Democratic president. Only Graham faces re-election next year.

Obama advisers say they're hopeful that without the heightened pressure of an imminent fiscal deadline, the president and Republicans can have constructive conversations on a broad deficit-reduction bill that would include concessions from the GOP on tax increases and from Democrats on entitlements.

But unless Boehner and McConnell bend on taxes, prospects for a sweeping deficit deal remain dim.

"You can't get around the leadership," said Patrick Griffin, who served as White House legislative director in the Clinton administration. "It's all about what happens going forward. Are the larger political dynamics going to change enough that Boehner and McConnell see it in their self-interest to change the way they position this?"

There's also no guarantee Obama and lawmakers won't find themselves facing a fiscal crisis in the coming months. The Senate still has to pass a bill funding the government after March 27 - the House passed its version of the measure Wednesday - and lawmakers will have to decide whether to raise the nation's debt limit in May.

Longer term, Rep. Paul Ryan previewed a 10-year plan on Wednesday that he said would eliminate federal deficits without raising taxes. That would tend to continue the budget standoff between the Republicans and Obama, who wants increased tax revenue to be part of any deal. But Ryan, the GOP vice presidential candidate in 2012, held out hope for communication across party lines.

The Wisconsin congressman, who also has spoken with Obama in recent days, said that "we're going to have to talk to each other to get an agreement about how to delay a debt crisis, how to save this country from a fiscal train wreck that's coming."

The president will have an opportunity to make his case to GOP leaders next week when he heads to Capitol Hill for separate meetings with the House and Senate Republican conferences. McConnell announced that Obama would attend the GOP Senate policy lunch, while Boehner's office said it was still working on a date.

Obama will also meet on Capitol Hill next week with House and Senate Democrats. The White House says all of the meetings were scheduled at the president's request.

White House aides said that while Wednesday's dinner would focus more narrowly on budget issues, the agenda for the lunches will be broader and will include discussions on immigration and gun control.

Even as Obama steps up his engagement with lawmakers, aides say he'll keep trying to build public support for his agenda and continues to believe pressure from the American people can force Republicans into action. Organizing for Action, a group run by former Obama campaign officials, sent an email Wednesday blaming "Republican obstructionism" for the sequester and urging supporters to sign a petition calling on Congress to back the president's approach for offsetting the cuts.

Review: 'The Wizard of Oz' at Madeira School

Review: 'The Wizard of Oz' at Madeira School Patch McLean, VA --

by Hannah Grudi of Chantilly High School

We’re off to see the Wizard! A pop of color makes Oz, the yellow brick road, the Emerald City, and those famous ruby slippers so vivid for Dorothy and her friends. The Madeira School production of The Wizard of Oz brought their own unique color to the show this weekend, while still keeping its original hue.

The Wizard of Oz is a classic, written by L. Frank Baum in 1900 and adapted into an iconic film in 1939. This is the second theatrical adaptation, and this musical dreamland brings to mind a children’s coloring book as Dorothy Gale ventures into the Land of Oz in hopes of simply finding her way home to her beloved Kansas family.

Dorothy (Erica Glaser) kept a child-like innocence and kindness throughout the show, and made you fall in love with the little Kansas native. Her singing was strong and steady, and her character voice evoked Dorothy's caring bordering on naiveté

There was also a strong supporting cast, with the Scarecrow (Gabrielle Bullard) leading the gang. Her performance kept you giggling throughout her scenes. She delightfully conveyed the Scarecrow’s bonelessness, even when dancing. Her footwork was always on point, particularly her tap dancing showcase during “The Merry Old Land of Oz”. The Tin Man (Anna Merod) had amiable vocal conviction as well, and the Lion (Anna Bradley) had commendable comedic timing, with her jokes hitting right on. The ensembles were equally strong, with the Ozzians creating a magnificent stage picture decked in green, and the Munchkins conveying childlike silliness. Also fantastic, were the crows, with clever, sharp mannerisms that made it easy to see believe that they were birds.

The lights and sound brought out the show's high points, illuminating the detailed and complex scenery and of course, the skillful actresses. There were occasionally some microphone issues, but the set changes ran smoothly and quickly to make up for it. The costumes also brought across the vibrant attitude of the show, and the makeup was phenomenal, with curious and new colors for each character. In this production, many actresses filled multiple roles and thus had to have several makeup changes throughout the show. Another aspect of the show that really brought out the fantastical aspects of the show was the use of puppetry to play roles. The puppet skills were spot on, from the tumbleweed as the tornado began, to the believability of Toto the dog, puppeteered by Claire Gillman.

As we wave goodbye to the yellow brick road and the Emerald City, the colorful talents of The Madeira School’s The Wizard of Oz made everyone feel a little bittersweet when Dorothy awoke from from her dream. She was home safe and sound, but we were sorry to see the bright and beautiful Land of Oz go.

Mom Allegedly Beats Son With Electrical Cord After Catching Him In Gay Act

A Texas woman faces assault charges after allegedly beating her teenage son with an electrical cord after catching him in "a homosexual act" with her male cousin.

CBSDFW reports that Erica Moore of Forest Hill, Texas, began "whooping" her son with the cord after finding her 18-year-old cousin performing oral sex on him in a bedroom.

“When I walked in I saw my son, it was just disgusting to me, the way he was looking and my cousin was looking, and my cousin immediately ran out the door," she is quoted as saying. "So that was my reaction because it disgusted me.”

Despite the fact that the act was determined by officials to have been consensual, Moore added, "They was committing a homosexual act in my house and we are totally against that."

She now faces charges of assault with bodily injury to a family member, and could face prison time if convicted, according to the report.

In other Texas-related news, a local gay couple had their backyard fence vandalized with a homophobic slur after news broke they were rejected from a wedding venue. Neighbors and volunteers quickly pitched in to help the couple re-paint their fence and cover up the epithet on the fence, according to reports.

Meanwhile, a pair of Texas-based lesbian teens are alleging that their high school's yearbook staff is discriminating against them because they are gay.

Sixteen-year-old Felicia Rivera said yearbook staff at Brennan High School decided to take out a picture that would have showed Rivera cuddling with her girlfriend Lialani Hernandez, 17, when they realized both teens were girls, according to the San Antonio Express-News. Former ATI IT and Wireless Director, Bart Bohn, along with ATI alumnus Stacey Zuniga of Unwired Nation, and ATI PR consultant Laura Beck, continue their nightly Entrepreneur’s Lounge at Fogo de Chao. Held each night of SXSW Interactive for the past 6 years, the so called Fogo “Meat Up” has been strongly supported by ATI. There, one can find the ATI team and both current and former ATI member companies, such as Calxeda, Polygraph Media and Spredfast—who actually closed their Series A funding on the roof of Fogo de Chao at the 2010 “Meat Up.” The guest list is currently closed (unless you are a national journalist or blogger email laurabeckcahoon@gmail.com for more information).

On Saturday, March 9th, ATI has partnered with Google and Erica Sumner to present a key event on politics and technology. Mitch Jacobson, Co-Director of the Clean Energy Incubator, will moderate a panel featuring four of the most important and influential politicians in the tech space: US Senator Jerry Moran, US Senator Mark Warner, US Senator Chris Coons, and US Representative Darrell Issa. The event will be held at the Capital Factory offices at 701 Brazos St. in downtown Austin.

Lastly, ATI will have a booth at this year’s Interactive Trade Show. On the floor at Booth #202, ATI’s Marketing and Events manager Robin Murphy, along with members of ATI’s portfolio, will be engaging with the Interactive attendees.
