Senators Weigh Obama Priorities On Vital Issue

WASHINGTON — Senators are weighing one of President Barack Obama's second-term priorities at the first Senate hearing on a comprehensive immigration overhaul. Many stubborn fault lines are sure to emerge.

Wednesday's Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, which comes amid a concerted focus on immigration reform from the White House to Capitol Hill, was to feature testimony from Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and – in an unusual move for Congress – an undocumented immigrant, Jose Antonio Vargas, a former journalist who founded the group Define American, which campaigns for immigration reform.

The former head of America Online, Steve Case, also was on the witness list, along with Chris Crane, president of the immigration and customs' workers union, which has opposed Obama's immigration policies.

The hearing comes a day after Obama, in his State of the Union address, renewed his call for sweeping immigration legislation that includes a pathway to citizenship for the nation's estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants. Meanwhile, a bipartisan group of eight senators has been meeting to develop a bill by next month that accomplishes eventual citizenship for undocumented immigrants while also containing enough border security and enforcement measures to gain conservative support.

The bipartisan Senate negotiators, including Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and John McCain, R-Ariz., are operating separately from the Senate Judiciary Committee, but the committee is expected to vote on any legislation they produce. In his opening statement for Wednesday's hearing, Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., planned to emphasize the importance of a straightforward and attainable path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, including the youths known as "dreamers" brought here by their parents.

"Comprehensive immigration reform must include a fair and straightforward path to citizenship for those `dreamers' and families who have made the United States their home – the estimated 11 million undocumented people in the United States," Leahy's statement said. "I am troubled by any proposal that contains false promises in which citizenship is always over the next mountain. I want the pathway to be clear and the goal of citizenship attainable."

But with conservative lawmakers heavily represented on the panel, the hearing seemed likely to put into harsh perspective the difficulties of getting comprehensive legislation through Congress despite the commitment from Obama and many Republican leaders. A number of these leaders have come to view immigration legislation as a political imperative after November's election, when Latino voters flocked to Obama and helped ensure his re-election. But that view has not been embraced by all rank-and-file Republicans.

"The biggest obstacle we face to reform is this nation's failure to establish lawfulness in the system," a top committee Republican, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., said after Obama's State of the Union speech Tuesday. "The president's plan meets the desire of businesses for low-wage foreign workers while doing nothing to protect struggling American workers."

In addition to border security and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already in the country, any comprehensive immigration legislation would probably address the issues of employer verification and temporary workers, and make changes to the legal immigration system. A major difference between Obama's proposals and the blueprint embraced by the bipartisan Senate negotiators is that the senators are making a pathway to citizenship conditional on border security being accomplished first – something Republicans demand – while Obama's plan contains no such linkage.

Vargas acknowledged his undocumented status in a high-profile piece in The New York Times Magazine in June 2011 but thus far has avoided deportation. He was part of a Washington Post team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for coverage of the Virginia Tech massacre. He wrote in his Times essay that his mother sent him from the Philippines to live with grandparents in California in 1993 when he was 12. He wrote that he didn't find out he was in the country undocumented until he applied for a driver's permit with forged documents. Reported by Huffington Post 14 hours ago.

District 41 Chooses Paul Gordon as Next Superintendent Patch Glen Ellyn, IL --

The District 41 Board of Education has chosen its next superintendent to lead the district forward beginning July 2013.

Paul Gordon, chief academic officer at the Adams 12 Five Star Schools in Westminster, Colo., will assume the role on July 1. He will earn a base salary of $195,000. Gordon will replace Ann Riebock, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

The District 41 Board of Education approved Gordon’s appointment and three-year contract during its regular meeting Monday night.

"After interviewing a number of truly exceptional candidates, the board was unanimous that Dr. Gordon is a great fit for our district," said Erica Nelson, the District 41 Board president. "He brings the professionalism and experience needed to continue the high achievement that District 41 has experienced under Dr. Riebock's leadership these past seven years. He also understands that continued growth for our students includes academic achievement, social-emotional development and belonging to a safe and welcoming place where teachers and staff care deeply about their work."

*Gordon’s educational background includes:*

· Bachelor of Arts degree from Metropolitan State University in Denver;
· Master of Arts from the University of Phoenix in Denver;
· Doctor of Education from Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, Calif.

He began his educational career as a middle school teacher in the Adams 12 schools and was promoted over the years to assistant principal, principal, executive director of schools, and in 2010 to chief academic officer, District 41 said in a news release.

"I'm drawn to District 41 because of its mission, vision, values and because I believe I can honor its traditions and its history of high academic achievement while fostering growth and innovation," Gordon said. "As a former teacher and now as an administrator, I thrive on the rewards of public education and relish its challenges. I'm looking forward to working with staff, parents and the community to build on the district's successes."

In addition to his salary, his contract also includes contributions for health and dental insurance, and retirement, District 41 said. He will be reimbursed up to $21,500 for expenses related to relocating from Colorado and acquiring housing near the district. Reported by Patch 3 days ago.

129 Schools Named To Preliminary CPS Closure List

*Updated story*

Two days ahead of the release of a preliminary list of Chicago Public Schools that are slated to be closed, Alderman Proco "Joe" Moreno (1st) was practically booed off the stage during a heated community hearing on school closures.

A video of the Monday hearing was posted on YouTube on Wednesday showing Moreno, who was criticized after siding with the city during last fall's teacher strike in Chicago, being drowned out by boos from parents and advocates while attempting to address the crowd.

The video illustrates the impassioned pleas that have come from parents, students and other community members that have been on display at hearings a CPS-appointed commission has held on the matter in recent weeks.

Early Wednesday evening, CPS released a list of 129 schools being considered for closure. The list is not final and district officials told DNAinfo that other schools not on the list could still face other actions "like co-location, or being a receiving school, or something of that nature."

Last month, the shouts of community members at a hearing at Truman College similarly drowned out district officials who were expected to present school metrics. Last week, at a meeting on the city's West Side, police barricaded the doors as more than a thousand people gathered to discuss closures at the Arturo Velasquez Institute's auditorium, DNAinfo reported.

Meanwhile, a group of Chicago parents called Parents 4 Teachers on Tuesday announced that they had filed a complaint with the CPS Inspector General James M. Sullivan. The group is seeking an investigation into the process by which CPS officials have determined which schools it plans to close, according to WBEZ, and has accused the district-appointed closing commission of having conflicts of interest tied to charter school networks.

"Someone from the outside needs to come in and shine a light on what’s going on at central office, they need to see what’s going on behind closed doors and make that information available to the public," Parents 4 Teachers cofounder Erica Clark told the station.

A full list of CPS school closings will not be released until late next month, after the hearings have concluded, because the Illinois state legislature and Gov. Pat Quinn previously granted the district a deadline extension. In the meantime, another round of CPS-led hearings on the upcoming closings will also begin Wednesday.

While CPS has claimed that it must close schools it has deemed "underutilized" in order to save the reportedly cash-strapped district money, critics of the plan have questioned the math involved, arguing that closing dozens of schools would actually cost the district more money than it would save. Per a Truthout story by Curtis Black published on Sunday:

Publicly, CPS has projected annual savings of $500,000 to $800,000 for each school closed. Privately, their estimates are lower – as low as $140,000 per school. And they estimate that upfront closing costs, including severance pay, security, and moving costs, could be as high as $4.5 million per school, potentially wiping out any savings for many years.

CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett last month announced the district will spare high schools and "high-performing" schools from closure. CPS has previously flagged as many as 330 schools as underutilized, according to Catalyst Chicago. Reported by Huffington Post 2 days ago.

Garden City, NY (PRWEB) February 14, 2013

Members and guests of the NAPW Clarksville, TN Local Chapter gathered on January 31st for a professional networking meeting at O’Charley’s on Wilma Rudolph Blvd.

The group of professional women enjoyed an evening of networking and discussing the goals for the Clarksville, TN Local Chapter in 2013.

“The conversation among members and guests was lively and enthusiastic,” said NAPW Clarksville, TN Local Chapter President Cheryl E. Durham.

“We welcomed new members, connected with each other, recapped our last meeting, and discussed some exciting plans for our Chapter this year.”

The Chapter President announced the names of women who recently joined the Chapter, including Jennifer Cofer, Tonya Vanterpool, Sharon Davis, and Alicia D. Myers-McCoy, and welcomed the women to the Clarksville Local Chapter.

She also relayed an email she had received from member Tenesa Davis who had recently attended a monthly meeting. In her email, Tenesa said she had thoroughly enjoyed the Chapter meeting she had attended and although unable to attend this meeting, she was looking forward to future meetings.

The Chapter discussed joining one of the Nashville Chapter’s upcoming meetings and discussed the formation of the Clarksville Local Chapter Board. The Chapter President encouraged members to consider taking on one of these roles.

“A vigorous conversation took place about how to strengthen the Clarksville Local Chapter in 2013 and how to make monthly meetings more convenient so that even more members from Clarksville and the surrounding area could attend and become more involved,” said the Chapter President.

The Chapter explored the idea of sending out a member questionnaire to better meet the goals and needs of the local members.

“We talked about emailing a questionnaire to members. The questionnaire would be short in length but contain pertinent questions that should aid us in gathering information about what members are looking for when it comes to Chapter meetings,” said Cheryl.

The group of professional women formulated several questions that will be included in the questionnaire and it was decided that it would be sent out no later than Monday, February 11th with a suspense date of Monday, February 18th.

Those in attendance at the January Clarksville Local Chapter meeting were: Pamela Allen, Erica Johnson-Lockett, Angela McGee, and Cheryl E. Durham.

This App Lets You Kill Painful Relationship Memories With The Press Of A Button

Nowadays it's rare to share something like a photo or status update on Facebook and not have it live on permanently.

But what happens when you want to rid yourself of that digital baggage in the case of a break-up or falling out with someone?

That's where KillSwitch, a new Android and iOS app launching today, steps in.

"KillSwitch is for anyone fresh out of a break-up looking to move on. What if they have a lot of pictures of their ex and they don't want to be reminded of that?" co-Founders Erica Mannherz and Clara De Soto told Business Insider. "KillSwitch is also for anybody that has had a falling out, be it a friendship or coworker, any relationship that you really don't want to have evidence or traces of on Facebook."

KillSwitch works by discreetly identifying a "target" from your list of Facebook friends, it will then find every photo, status update, and post related to you and the individual and will wipe all traces from Facebook without them finding out.

All images are then put into a hidden album that only the KillSwitch user can view. This is to make sure you don't regret doing something in the heat of the moment.

"We have a friend who deactivates her Facebook profile after every break-up," Mannherz and De Soto said. "We don't see KillSwitch as a vindictive tool but part of a greater healing process."

Killswitch is very simple to use because everything is done from behind the scenes, seamlessly.

The app is available for Android starting today and iPhone very soon, for $0.99. We haven't been able to test it, so we can vouch for how well it works. So, buyer beware!

A portion of the proceeds will go to the American Heart Association so "broken hearts can help mend broken hearts".

OK! Loves: Burning Love: If You Like 'The Bachelor' You'll LOVE This Hilarious Series

Imagine if *The Bachelor* was intentionally funny…. That’s *Burning Love*.

I have never been more excited to watch a series, on the web or even on TV, than I am for Burning Love season 2. I binge watched the entire first season in one afternoon. It’s that good.

If you are a fan of The Bachelor and like to laugh, you HAVE to check out the series. It is produced by *Ben Stiller*, and all the fun is happening on *Yahoo*.

Plus some of my favorite celebrity boyfriends (yes, I have many) are a part of this season, competing for the love of *Julie Gristlewhite* (played by *June Diane Raphael*). *Michael Cera*, *Colin Hanks*, and *Adam Brody* just to name a few!

I sent over a few questions to the creator and one of the head writers of the show, *Erica Oyama Marino* and here’s what she had to say:

*OK!: How did all the "bachelors" come to be for the second series? Who called you begging to be involved? *

*Erica Oyama Marino*: We were so lucky to be able to call our ridiculously funny friends (*Joe LoTruglio*, *Rob Huebel*, *Paul Scheer* to name-drop a few) to appear on the show. We found out that Colin Hanks and *Jerry O'Connell* were fans of the first season so we jumped at the chance to invite them too.

*OK!: What other reality shows do you love to watch? *

*EOM*: I love The Bachelor, *The Bachelorette* and *Bachelor Pad* obviously. But I could also watch House Hunters International 24 hours a day. The simplicity of people moving to Dubai looking for closet space, it's very soothing.

*OK!: What luxuries and frustrations does having the show on the web bring? *

*EOM*: We loved the freedom and fast pace of producing a web series. I guess the only frustration would be that since we were a smaller operation, we didn't have a helicopter/exotic location budget!

*OK!: Where did inspiration for the dates come from—The Bachelor, friends' stories? *

*EOM*: The dates on The Bachelor are wonderfully insane. Where else would you find people bungee jumping, performing Shakespeare and drinking goat's milk... for love? Also the forced enthusiasm of the contestants while on these grueling dates is amazing. It's like, "YES! There's nothing I'd rather be doing than jumping in this freezing lake with you and ten other women!"

And if you missed series 1 of Burning Love, don't worry—it's coming to *E!* soon!

Which bachelor do you want Julie to end up with? Tell us in the comments below or on Twitter *@OKMagazine*

Middlefield's Barber Lands The Big One, Again Patch Durham-Middlefield, CT --

Middlefield fisherman Harry Barber will be adding another fishing pin to his trophy case this weekend.

The Lake Beseck resident is one of 75 Connecticut anglers who will be recognized by the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) during the Fifth Annual Trophy Fish Award Ceremony at the Northeast Fishing and Hunting Show in the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford on Saturday.

Anglers will be presented certificates recognizing their achievement of having caught or landed the largest fish in one of several species categories during 2012.

Barber said he planned to attend Saturday's event with his family but wasn't sure which of the four fish he submitted to the state actually tipped the scale as the largest.

"It's a lot of fun," he said about the event.

In 2011, Barber earned the DEEP's Lifetime Achievement Award for his years of dedication to fishing.

Last spring, Patch caught up with Barber after he caught not one, but two primitive Bowfin.

New state records were set for seven fish species this year and for blue crab in 2012.

Read The Ideas For A Tweet Ballet Patch Walnut Creek, CA --

Who says you can't build a ballet by Twitter?

This week Diablo Ballet is compiling the suggestions that came in by Twitter pitching ideas for the first professional dance production constructed entirely from ideas by Internet users.

From "how about no women being thrown around by men?" to moves with "subtlety" not "freakish flexibility "— Diablo Ballet has some tweets to consider in choreographing the ballet.

Valentine's Day was the last day for submissions via Diablo Ballet's Twitter hash tag, #DiabloWebBallet.

Participants are also voting on three potential music selections at Diablo Ballet's YouTube page.

For the Twitter suggestions, it's now up to Diablo Ballet Artistic Director Lauren Jonas and choreographer Robert Dekkers to pick seven choreographic suggestions. Dekker, a dancer with Diablo Ballet, is artistic director of San Francisco's Post:Ballet.

"We want to show people the creative process of dance and help make ballet accessible to all," said Dan Meagher, director of marketing for Diablo Ballet, in a press release. Meagher developed the Web Ballet idea.

The Web Ballet will be presented as part of Diablo Ballet's Inside the Dancer's Studio series March 1 and 2 at the Shadelands Arts Center Auditorium in Walnut Creek. The winning suggestions will receive tickets to the performance and a photo from the created work, autographed by Dekkers.
