Former Teacher Gets Parole After Admitting to Sex with Student Patch Montclair, NJ --

The 33-year-old former West Orange High School teacher and Montclair resident who admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student was sentenced Monday and will serve no jail time, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

Erica DePalo, a former Essex County Teacher of the Year, was sentenced on Monday in Newark Superior Court to a three-year suspended sentence of parole with no jail time. She will also forfeit of her teaching license and be on lifetime supervision under Megan's Law, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office said.

When DePalo acccepted the plea deal in February the interim superintendent of the West Orange School District, James O'Neill, told Patch he was “personally disappointed” and felt the parents and students in the district “have been poorly served by the justice system in Essex County."

DePalo was arrested on Aug. 31, 2012 and initially charged with aggravated sexual assault and a second count of sexual assault since the student was 15 and could not consent.

DePalo was chosen as the 2011-12 County Teacher of the Year, which is part of the state Department of Education’s New Jersey Teacher of the Year program. That year, she also was selected as one of the five finalists for the Teacher of the Year in the same program.

DePalo's lawyer Anthony Alfano could not be reached for comment.  Reported by Patch 2 days ago.

12 Successful People Share The Biggest Career Risk They Ever Took

12 Successful People Share The Biggest Career Risk They Ever Took Last week TIME released its annual 100 Most Influential People list, filled with luminaries who have had a major impact on the world.

We had an opportunity to attend the TIME 100 Gala at Lincoln Center in New York City, where we asked influencers: "What's the riskiest career decision you've ever made?"

Chess wunderkind Magnus Carlsen told us from the red carpet that there wasn't "particularly [any] risky decision" that he's had to make, whereas Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey (who was on last year's TIME 100 list) said he's "scared every day."

-Bryan Cranston, actor-

"The riskiest career decision is to go into this career. You have to be a risk taker of some degree to be able to say, 'Alright, I'm throwing it all out there. Whatever happens, happens. I want to be an actor.' "

"If that means sleeping on someone's couch for the rest of my life, then that's what that is."

Read Cranston's Time100 bio here.

-Christopher Fabian and Erica Kochi, developers-

*Kochi:* "Starting an innovation group and having a startup within a very large organization are probably the riskiest things we've ever done. There isn't really any structure to support us, but we just thought it was a good idea so we said 'Lets do it.' And thankfully, we did have support in the end."

*Fabian*: "I think the riskiest thing that I did last year was presenting a failure fair at the UN. We're very lucky to have the support of our executive director and people inside UNICEF who recognize that with every success is a string of failures."

"However, it's still hard to get up in front of cameras, in front of reporters to talk about the things that didn't work. But talking like that and thinking like that is really important to change the way we do development."

Read Kochi and Fabian's Time100 bios here.

-Magnus Carlsen, chess wunderkind-

"I decided to be a professional chess player. At that point, it wasn't a particularly risky decision, because I was already, you know, quite good."

District 41 Bans 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' Patch Glen Ellyn, IL --

*Editor's note: *A caution to readers: Parents at the meeting spoke frankly and bluntly on the topic, using language some might find objectionable. Patch is quoting the parents verbatim.

The Glen Ellyn School District 41 Board of Education on Monday has nixed a recommendation to keep a controversial novel in eighth-grade classrooms at Hadley Junior High School at after two parents requested to have it removed because of its mature content.

The book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, has been available to eighth graders in literacy classrooms for independent reading. Per the school's literacy curriculum, students could choose to read a book and put it down at any time.

Hadley parents Jen and Brian Bradfield submitted their request after their daughter stopped reading the book because of its disturbing content, including references to bestiality and coupons for free oral sex.

Upon reviewing the request, researching reviews of the book and hearing from the Bradfields and the teacher who recommended the book, a committee comprised of Hadley teachers and administrators, one parent and a district administrator recommended the district keep the book at Hadley. The recommendation also included an increase in communication with parents to remind them of the importance of parental awareness of students' book choices.

"We can’t even describe to you how hurt we are that this was allowed, or recommended to her," Jen Bradfield told board members Monday.

"There are specifics of a boy making a fake coupon advertising a free blowjob—this is what our daughter read," she said. She read from the book, "'There was a guy Carl Burns and everyone called him C.B. and one day he got so drunk at a party, he tried to (have sex with) the host's dog.'

"...I don't see a place for this for 13-year-olds," she said.

--------------------

Brian Bradfield said the book's content—bestiality, homosexuality, heterosexuality, oral sex for money—raised questions an eighth grader shouldn't have to ask.

"I didn’t want to have this conversation with my daughter in eighth grade," he said. "It's hard not to get emotional and upset because we're here talking about things we never thought we'd talk about... Our innocent child has already been tainted."

According to a publisher's description on Amazon, the book is a "haunting novel about the dilemma of passivity vs. passion... the story of what it's like to grow up in high school. More intimate than a diary, Charlie's letters are singular and unique, hilarious and devastating."

Hadley literacy teacher Lynn Bruno said while many Hadley students have supportive and caring parents like the Bradfields, there are students facing issues similar to those depicted in the book and don't have supportive parents to look to for guidance.

"Like it or not, your daughters and sons in eighth grade heard the word ‘blowjob,’" Bruno said. "I’ve been at this for 30 years… What they are exposed to in terms of dialogue, in terms of media... I don’t like it any more than you do, but it's (out) there."

She added books like Perks of Being a Wallflower are valuable because of the lessons students can learn from characters' decisions in difficult situations.

"I have children in my classroom who need this knowledge now because they’re facing those issues… You cannot take away from children who need to have those conversations... just because it upsets some other children."

Board member Sam Black said while he’s reluctant to censor material, he agreed the issues addressed in the book have no place in a middle school.

Board member Terra Costa Howard said her two daughters, in eighth and ninth grade, have both read the book and that she couldn't support removing the book from classrooms.

“The book was a suggestion (to my child) and she brought it home and we looked at it and talked about it, and she read it. …As a parent, that is my responsibility," she said.

"We, as parents and as board members who have been around, cannot in today’s day in age put our heads under the sand and think our children don’t know, and are not exposed to, (these) things... We live in an age where these kids are exposed to things much sooner than we want them to be.”

Board president Erica Nelson, who also voted in favor of the recommendation to keep the book, said the issue is subjective.

“This book might not even be appropriate for someone in ninth or tenth depending on their maturity level, but it might be appropriate for somebody at the end of eighth grade (with a different maturity level)," she said.

The board voted 4-2 against the recommendation. Board member John Kenwood was not present for the vote.

Following the vote, District 41 parent Betsy Pringle suggested Hadley staff implement a rating system for books, so parents could be made aware of potentially controversial books available to students.

Gun Control Proponents Use Tragedy to Attack Sen. Ayotte on Background Checks

$

Erica Lafferty, the daughter of slain Sandy Hook Elementary School principal Dawn Hochsprung, attended Senator Kelly Ayotte's (R-NH) town hall meeting on April 30 and asked the Senator why she voted against expanded background checks.

Lafferty pointed out that Ayotte said she voted against background checks in the interest of gun store owners who would be harmed by them. Then she asked: "I am just wondering why the burden of my mother being gunned down in the halls of her elementary school isn't more important than that."

After not getting the answer she wanted, Lafferty marched out of the town hall meeting, making it clear she "had had enough."

This set the stage for emotional shouting matches that failed to take into consideration the key issue about expanded background checks--namely, that they would have done nothing to prevent the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.

Background checks were already in place when the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary happened, and expanding them will not do anything to stop a determined and wicked person from carrying out such a heinous act again. Adam Lanza was a cold-blooded killer who went around background checks by stealing the weapons he used to commit his crime.

Morning Joe Edits Out Senator's Town Hall Response to Gun Control Supporters

On MSNBC's Morning Joe Tuesday, footage of Sen. Kelly Ayotte's (R-NH) town hall was carefully edited to take away the Senator's rational explanations for why she opposes background checks, while leaving in full the emotional appeals from gun control proponents attending the Monday event.

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

The segment opened by showing Erica Lafferty, daughter of the slain Sandy Hook Elementary School principal, speaking to Ayotte at the town hall. Lafferty said Ayotte had opposed background checks because they would hurt gun store owners in New Hampshire, and then she asked why the thought of "my mother being gunned down in the halls of the elementary school isn't as important as that."

Instead of explaining that background checks had nothing to do with the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, the Morning Joe crew showed video of Lafferty storming out of the town hall in protest--after she didn't get the answer she wanted.

Host Joe Scarborough and panelist Chuck Todd used the discussion to suggest Republicans' stances on background checks are making or breaking their popularity among constituents.

Scarborough said, "We've been looking at the polls, and Ayotte is down, of course." He continued, "You look at Pat Toomey [R-PA], and [he's] up 7 percentage points in his home state."

Scarborough did not mention Toomey has completely disavowed and abandoned the very bill he was championing two weeks ago--the Manchin-Toomey "compromise."

Scarborough specifically suggested Ayotte will face political fallout for her vote, saying there is no place for any politician to run and hide in New Hampshire.

However, a Quinnipiac University Poll was on the screen showing that Americans trust Republicans with guns 42% to 38% over Democrats. But Scarborough bypassed the poll, and instead went back to describing gun control as an "emotional" issue.

The College of Education at Purdue University launched its first online program in the fall of 2011, and now the first-ever online class is graduating. Twenty students will finish the online Master of Science in Education in Learning Design and Technology (MSED) this spring.

West Lafayette, IN (PRWEB) April 30, 2013

The College of Education at Purdue University launched its first online program in the fall of 2011, and now the first-ever online class is graduating. Twenty students will finish the online Master of Science in Education in Learning Design and Technology (MSED) this spring.

The MSED is a long-established program, having been available on campus for nearly 35 years. Its strong history and presence was part of the reason University faculty and administrators chose it as the first program to be offered solely through the online format.

The MSED focuses on the design, implementation and evaluation of learning materials and experiences that integrate effective instructional techniques and technology. Students learn to customize and tailor learning plans for a variety of fields, organizations, groups and settings, resulting in applications in K-12 and higher education, corporate training, e-learning and curriculum development, healthcare and anywhere else people need to be taught new skills and information.

Students in the online program interact in a virtual classroom interface where they view assignments, post discussions, upload coursework and communicate with their fellow students as well as faculty members, who are active researchers with both past and current experience to share.

“The program prepared me to approach instructional design systematically, to be more effective at faculty training, to be mindful of learner motivation, and to identify non-training solutions to performance problems,” said MSED student Erica Vail. “It was practical and was very relevant to my work, and I was able to help and be helped by so many of the other students that I met as we shared our work experiences with each other and used each other as a resource.”

Several students will travel to West Lafayette to take part in commencement activities on campus, which will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2013.

“This graduating class is proof of the success of our first fully online venture,” said Dr. James Lehman, professor and associate dean of the College of Education. “I’m sure they will continue to make Purdue proud through their professional contributions to teaching, training and learning, while we look forward to expanding our list of online programs so we can welcome even more students to our community.”

Known for focusing on science, technology and research, Purdue provides programs in the online format to further its mission of innovation in these fields. With its long history, rich traditions and a diverse community that includes an international student body and a faculty and staff dedicated to the highest scholarly and ethical standards, Purdue continues its tradition of academic excellence and personal attention to each student, both on campus and online.

US News & World Report has ranked Purdue among the top 100 online graduate education programs in its 2013 listing of “Best Colleges”. US News also ranked Purdue’s respected College of Education No. 32 among the nation’s education schools.

Purdue also maintained its top 25 ranking among US News’ list of the nation's public universities and is 65th among all universities. In other 2013 rankings, the University is listed among the Princeton Review's 150 "best value" colleges and ranked in the top 100 in the QS World University Rankings.

FDA Approves Morning After Pill For Ages 15 And Up

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved on Tuesday the over-the-counter sale of morning-after pills for those 15 years of age and older, and will make the pills available on store shelves, rather than being sold from a pharmacy.

Until now, emergency contraception has been available by prescription only to those under the age of 17, and was only sold from behind pharmacy counters.

The FDA ruling, which takes effect immediately, applies to only one brand of emergency contraception – Plan B One-Step, made by Pennsylvania-based pharmaceutical company Teva – and requires that the product be security-tagged to avoid theft, and only be sold over-the-counter in stores that have a pharmacy.

The product will be packaged with a product code prompting a cashier to request and verify the customer’s age, and those who cannot provide age verification will not be able to complete the purchase.

The product will now be labeled “not for sale to those under 15 years of age *proof of age required* not for sale where age cannot be verified,” the FDA said in a statement late Tuesday.

Plan B One-Step is a levonorgestrel-based emergency contraception pills that contains the same active ingredients as birth control pills, but at higher doses to prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse.

Tuesday’s FDA ruling defies a judge's order to make the pills available to all girls and women of all ages. On April 5, US District Court Judge Edward Korman ruled that a 2011 decision by the head of the US Health and Human Services to require teens under the age of 17 to obtain a prescription for the pills was "politically motivated" and "scientifically unjustified.” Judge Korman’s ruling directed the FDA to make the pills available to all girls of reproductive age without a prescription within 30 days.

On Wednesday, the Justice department filed a formal appeal of that court order with the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in New York, according to court documents.

According to Terry Baynes of Reuters, FDA spokeswoman Erica Jefferson said DoJ lawyers have asked the court to temporarily halt its order from taking effect while the appeal is pending.

FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said the drug agency’s current decision to allow the morning after pills to be sold over-the-counter to 15 year olds was based on a review of data submitted by the Teva, which showed that girls and women aged 15 and older were able to understand how the pill works without the assistance of a health care provider.

"The data reviewed by the agency demonstrated that women 15 years of age and older were able to understand how Plan B One-Step works, how to use it properly, and that it does not prevent the transmission of a sexually transmitted disease," she said in the FDA statement.

The appeals case is Tummino et al. v. Hamburg et al., U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, No. 12-763. Reported by redOrbit 14 hours ago.

'The book cover is 100% beautiful'

The book cover is 100% beautiful and tells me lots about the characters. I love the illustrations. I love that you can colouring and activities at the end of the book. I wish the next books also have this at the back.

I really enjoyed the prologue because it made me curious about the characters. I love the characters. They are interesting and make me curious about what's going to happen. I love their names - my favourite is Marina who loves hearts, like I do. I like the way the story shows the pirates thought the Nori would be one thing and turned out to be another. I like the invented mermaid language and I love mermaids, so enjoy reading a story about them. I like the idea of kelp tea and all the other food they eat.

I really enjoyed this book.
