Reader's Photos: St. Patrick's Sláinte at C.B. Hannegan's Patch Los Gatos, CA --

C.B. Hannegan's volunteer Emma Abela and town poet laureate Erica Goss sent the following photos to Los Gatos Patch of the revelry Sunday, March 18 in honor of St. Patrick's Day.

As in years past, hundreds congregated at the popular Irish pub and restaurant on Bachman Avenue to enjoy the festivities, which included unlimited barbecue, live music and Celtic bagpipe musicians.

Famous D.J. Sean O'Callaghan was the master of ceremonies and the group Pladdohg performed Irish music on the main stage, plus the Rosemary Turco's Irish dancers.

Los Gatos resident Richard Katz also blew his bagpipe on the crowded patio, where the C.B. Hannegan's Homeboy Bagpipers parade happened at noon, 3, 5 and 7 p.m.

Roving singers included John Hopkirk and Anne Murphy, who performed traditional Irish music along with the Greene-Comerford Academy of Irish Dancers.

Goss organized the first "Pint of Poetry" crawl event, celebrating Irish poetry. Local muses gathered at the Los Gatos Library and then walked to C.B. Hannegan's in a procession while reading poetry at various spots along the way.

The Cruzers, an Americeltic rock and roll band, finished off the evening with a four-hour performance that ended with the singing of happy birthday to owner Chris Benson at midnight. Reported by Patch 3 days ago.

Here is a look at Hampton Bays students that were caught doing great things.

*Saving the Sharks*

Sofia Solano Cruz and her family will get to take a vacation to the Cayman Islands after Cruz won first place in a contest, sponsored by the Beneath the Sea organization. The contest was created to make young people aware of some of the perils faced by marine creatures. David Hockney may be questioned as mystery surrounds death of assistant Dominic Elliott

David Hockney may be questioned as mystery surrounds death of assistant Dominic Elliott This is Hull and East Riding --

MYSTERY surrounds the sudden death of a 23-year-old man at the home of East Yorkshire's most celebrated artist.

David Hockney's assistant and friend Dominic Elliott, 23, died at Scarborough General Hospital on Sunday morning.

He was taken there by a friend after falling seriously ill at the world-renowned painter's home in Bridlington.

Humberside Police say the circumstances of his death are "unclear" and investigations are continuing.

The Mail understands Mr Hockney may himself be questioned by police.

Mr Elliott's grandfather Walter Elliott, 83, said he believed he had been at a party.

He said: "We don't know what happened but the suspicion is he had too much to drink.

"He didn't live with him but did stay at his house quite often.

"I think David looked upon him as a son. It was like a father-son relationship.

"David even bought him a car once but Dominic actually wrote it off in a bad accident and was lucky to survive."

The artist himself was said to be "incredibly upset" over what had happened.

His publicist Erica Bolton said Mr Elliott had been a "very important person" in his life and they had worked together for more than two years.

She said: "Like everybody else he is in a state of shock."

Mr Elliott was a keen sportsman, playing for Driffield Hockey Club and Bridlington Rugby Club.

Adam Saltonstall, captain of the hockey club, played with him for seven years.

"Dominic was a fantastic guy and much-loved member of Driffield Hockey Club, who will be sadly missed by everyone in the hockey family," he said.

"He was a larger-than-life character with a heart of pure gold who made people smile by simply being around him. This horrific news has thoroughly rocked the club and left a huge hole in everyone's lives."

The hockey club has cancelled training this week as a mark of respect and there will be a one-minute silence at this weekend's matches.

Mr Saltonstall said: "Dominic was due to play for us last Saturday and Sunday and was included in the first-team squad for the last game of the season, this coming weekend. He would have wanted us to carry on and play the game this weekend.

"It was both shock and horror when I got a call on Sunday about what had happened.

"I didn't believe it at first."

Mr Elliott is believed to have been introduced to 75-year-old Mr Hockney by a friend to help him with a series of works around the seaside town.

He was also the subject of a portrait by the artist in 2008.

"David Hockney is a quiet person and Dominic respected that by not speaking about the job," said Mr Saltonstall.

"The only time he did was when Dominic sat for a portrait.

"He was glowing and at the next training session came with a picture of the portrait. I think it was one of his proudest moments."

Mr Elliott is believed to have gone to Mr Hockney's house at the weekend after going out on a night out with friends in Bridlington.

His grandmother Betty Kent, 84, said he had been out with "arty types".

She said: "He'd been to his mother's in the afternoon as his washing machine was broken and he needed his jeans and clothes as he was going out.

"He was going out with his mates."

Gordon Morrice, Bridlington Rugby Club chairman, said: "He played for us for four years and was such a popular lad. He didn't speak much about his work with David Hockney, but I know he worked as his assistant helping set up equipment.

"He was helping him for quite a long time – maybe four years."

Mr Elliot was also popular in his local pub, The Bull and Sun.

Barman Carl Beevers said: "He was a really nice guy.

"He was friendly, happy, he was always joking and smiling. He used to come into the pub two or three times a week with friends."

Friends said he met Sir Paul McCartney last week and was a trusted member of the artist's inner circle, with his own key to Mr Hockney's house.

A post-mortem examination was due to take place today to establish the cause of death.

A Humberside Police spokesman said: "The circumstances of the man's death are not clear and officers are currently undertaking enquiries to establish events leading to his death. There were no signs of violence." Reported by This is 2 days ago.

David Hockney 'in shock' after unexplained death of assistant Dominic Elliott This is Hull and East Riding -- ARTIST David Hockney says he is in shock after the death of his aide and friend Dominic Elliott.
The assistant, 23, complained of feeling unwell while staying at the artist's Bridlington home at the weekend.
He was driven to Scarborough Hospital by John Fitzherbert, Mr Hockney's long-term partner, at 6am on Sunday, but he died just after arrival.
It is understood that Mr Elliot had been drinking on the night before his death but it is unknown whether this contributed.
Police are treating the death as unexplained and Mr Hockney said in a text message: "There was no party, I am in shock with this." Mr Hockney's publicist Erica Bolton said Mr Elliott had been a "very important person" in his life and they had worked together for more than two years. She said: "Like everybody else he is in a state of shock." Mr Elliott's body has now been formally identified, Humberside Police said this morning. A post mortem examination is due to take place this afternoon at Hull Royal Infirmary. It is not expected to be concluded until early evening. A police spokeswoman said: "Whilst it is hoped this may provide some clues as to the cause of Mr Elliott's death, results from post mortem examinations are not always conclusive and it may then take several more weeks for complete results to be available to provide a pathologist with the information required to identify any cause. "Humberside Police continue to treat Mr Elliott's death as unexplained. "Officers will continue to make routine inquiries into the events leading up to the arrival of the deceased at hospital and his subsequent death which includes talking to friends, family, neighbours, colleagues and other associates who may be able to assist."

JFK Talented and Gifted Students Compete in Connecticut History Day Patch Enfield, CT --

This year's theme for National History Day is turning points. March 16 was a turning point in JFK Middle School history, as 23 students from the talented and gifted program competed in Manchester for the first time in 18 years. I cannot attest to the years 1969-1994, so I will be a respectable historian and stick to twhat I can document!

The challange this year for the TAG students was to pick a topic that represented a major turning point in human history. The students chose the group exhibit category and had to adhere to guidelines, including creating a process paper, a annotated works cited page, a thesis statement, and captions and pictures supporting their thesis statement. This is easier said than done!

Sixth graders Alex Krawiec, Julia Radziewicz, Skylar Steele, and Hannah Smith focused on Steve Jobs' disruptive innovation of touch screen technology. Zach Healy, Nick Steele, Matt Campo, and Jaquelyn Daigneau chose to do their group exhibit on Enfield's industrial revolution, namely Bigelow Carpet and Hazard Powder. Both topics drew praise from the judges.

Eighth graders Brian Ruel and Alex Jensen did their turning point topic on the atomic age, and the judges liked their mix of science and history. Ethan Shea and Kyle Chester had a good review on their global warming exhibit. Erica Lovering, Sara Prosinski, and Alessia Manzi's project focusing on America's fast food culture and the rise of obesity rates drew a lot of attention from the judges and the public.

Seventh graders Jeremy Comfry, Alaina Santos, Rose Garrow, and Kaylee Piotte created their exhibit around the jet engine and the rise of airlines, and received good reviews. Kevin Stroiney, Ashley Smith, Grace O'Neil, and Sydney Nash were able to place first in the junior group exhibit division, earning them a spot in the state finals at Central Connecticut State University on April 27. Their topic focused on the impact of irrigation on human history.

All TAG students worked very hard in preparation for Connecticut History Day.  It was challenging, enjoyable, and eye-opening for them and me. We'll continue to 'make history' in future competitions. Reported by Patch 2 days ago.

School Board Says AMS Name Change Will Happen, But to What Name?

School Board Says AMS Name Change Will Happen, But to What Name? Patch Union City, CA --

The fight for renaming Alvarado Middle School after Filipino American leaders continued Tuesday as about 150 local youth marched from the school to the New Haven Board of Education meeting to voice their support.

The Tuesday night meeting was an informational one called for by the school board to clear the air on a number of concerns.

The topic became a highly debated, contentious community issue when the board discussed possibly renaming the school after Filipino American labor leaders Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz on March 5. The matter raised many questions from community members.

As the decision on the name change lingers, school board members set the record straight on a few key items Tuesday night.

*A name change is already approved*

“This board has already decided to change the name of Alvarado Middle School. That is not the question anymore. The question is: What will the name be?” board president Linda Canlas stated Tuesday.

According to board member Michelle Matthews, the board unanimously approved renaming Alvarado Middle School during their Jan. 22 meeting.

A naming committee then pondered various names before presenting the board with the Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School name — an idea that has been kicked around the district for 13 years and passed over three times in the past, board members said.

*Who’s going to pay for it?*

A big concern among those opposing the name change is the cost, which district officials estimated at $10,000, according to media reports. Though board members themselves did not directly comment on the cost Tuesday night, supporting organizations said they would raise funds and pay for it themselves.

“Rest assured that we will not ask for general funds from the school district,” said councilman Jim Navarro, who is also a member of the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce and a former New Haven board member. “Not a single dollar from the district will be spent or fund this project.”

*What’s in a name?*

Many of those opposed to the change argue that it would neglect the historic significance of its current name — that of two-time governor Juan B. Alvarado, who served as California’s governor from 1836 to 1842, and for whom the town of Alvarado was named after.

But that’s not exactly the case, according to Matthews.

“While I recognize the attachment to Alvarado Middle School and its name, those of you who know this community and know our history know that the reason Alvarado Middle School was named Alvarado Middle School is because it was located adjacent to Alvarado Elementary,” Matthews said.

Other schools in the district already reflect and embrace the community’s diversity, including Cesar Chavez Middle School, which was originally named New Haven Middle School.

The Alvarado name also continues to live on as two main roads and an elementary school bear it, board member Jonas Dino added.

If the name change is adopted, it would be the first school in the country named after Filipino Americans, according to board members. “That’s extraordinary right there,” Dino said.

*Public comment*

Despite no action being taken, more than a dozen community members and leaders spoke at the meeting to reiterate their support:

· Joe Ku’e Angeles, a Logan counselor and member of the New Haven Pilipino American Society for Education: “We have the money … This needs to happen for diversity, for no other reason than that. New Haven is a district and a community that celebrates the idea of diversity … This economy will not change in six months. It will not change in a year.”

· Erica Viray-Santos, a San Leandro teacher and former New Haven teacher: “We are not just trying to rename a facility, we are trying to instill a strong sense of self … This is not just Filipino history, it’s American history.”

· A James Logan High School student: “This renaming does not divide us but unite us … This is history in the making. We are part of this history. I say ‘we’ even though I am not Filipino. I am the people. I am Itliong, I am Vera Cruz.”

The only opposing voice came from the Alvarado Middle School School Site Council. Member Lance Nishihira read a letter to the school board acknowledging the importance of the two Filipino American leaders but asking they delay taking any action on the matter.

"What’s the hurry? Such a discretionary expense can surely wait until the school district is on firmer footing," Nishihira said.

*What happens now?*

The Board of Education will decide on a name based on a recommendation from the naming committee at their next meeting, which will be held April 16.

How do you feel about the name change? Tell us in the comments below. Reported by Patch 22 hours ago.

Decision Delayed on Proposed Bonnie Cove Condominiums Patch Glendora, CA --

The proposed 23-unit condominium project on Bonnie Cove Avenue and Gladstone Street sparked debate during Tuesday’s Planning Commission meeting on whether the project would be appropriate addition on the long vacant lot.

City staff initially recommended the commission to deny the Olson Company’s request for zone changes, stating that the project did not “complement existing development in terms of scale and character,” nor did it provide a satisfactory plan for current vacant and unused lots on the property. The plan includes the option of 30 additional units in the future.

The 1,300 to 1,500 square-foot, two-story detached condominiums were estimated to sell in the upper $300,000 range to the lower $400,000 range.

But many nearby residents spoke during Tuesday’s public comment period in support of the project, insisting that a residential project would be more favorable compared to the three-story medical facility expansion proposed in 2007.

Erica Landman, who was involved in the push to prevent the 2007 project from materializing, praised the Olson Company’s outreach to nearby residents.

“Yes there’s 23 condos, but I would take that any day over a 48-foot building with the option of going 80 feet tall,” said Landman.

A representative with the Olson Company said that 104 signatures in support of the plan were collected from nearby residents.

However, not everyone was supportive of new condominiums. Residents and property owners raised concerns that the project would congest parking and increase traffic. Others believed that adding more condominiums in the city would decrease property values.

“We’ve got condos and apartments coming out of ears,” said property owner Madeline Webb. “We are developing a class of people who are happy to stay in a condo. Do any of you all live in a 1400-square-foot place with four bedrooms? That’s an awfully small place and it tends to be a low-income area.”

The three present planning commissioners – Cliff Hamlow, Eric Duyshart and Joseph Battaglia – said the project had potential and believed that it deserved consideration from the two absent commissioners – Michael Matthews and Andrew Jared.

“These are single family detached homes,” said Battaglia. “Granted that they are on smaller lots, they do create from what I’ve seen in this area and in other areas also, nice, clean communities because they have an HOA and they have invested people. I have a hard time turning it down at this point.”

The public hearing was moved to the April 2 Planning Commission meeting. Reported by Patch 20 hours ago.

(PRWEB UK) 21 March 2013

The former creative professionals relocated from London offices to Hampshire countryside in 2008 to put an eye for all things beautiful and some very valuable marketing, design and textiles backgrounds into The Other Duckling, which launched in 2009. Today, the website serves as the showcase for an exquisite collection of Erica’s fabulous knitted home accessories that sits alongside shabby chic furniture, designer homewares and vintage finds, which Andrew has scoured and sourced from like-minded and very trusted designers and merchants based far and wide. Barclays Recommends Continued Exposure to Equities over Fixed Income

Global Outlook favors developed market equities, especially in the US, Japan, UK and Spain

NEW YORK & LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Investors should stay with an equity rich portfolio and focus more on idiosyncratic factors within asset classes than on the potential for major risk-on, risk-off market swings, according to Barclays' latest flagship quarterly research publication, Global Outlook: Stay with equities for now. Despite the recent rally in equities, recommendations made in Barclays' December 2012 Global Outlook favoring equities over bonds continue to hold true, with equities outperforming almost all other assets by a wide margin.

"The predominant risks today are that the market has come too far too fast, and that investor sentiment has become overly optimistic," said Larry Kantor, Head of Research. "However, we expect any correction to be contained given persistent fundamental support for equities, including extraordinary monetary stimulus, low risk of a cyclical downturn and attractive valuations relative to fixed income."

The resolution of US fiscal issues in the direction of near-term restraint is occurring against a background of better-than-expected economic momentum, thus moderating growth enough for the Fed to maintain aggressive asset buying. However, as signs of improving US growth prospects are confirmed, there is a risk that investors begin to price in an end to the Fed's massive bond-buying program - although this is unlikely to be an issue for the next few months.

In Europe, Barclays has revised down forecasts of growth in Q4 2012 and Q1 2013. However, against the background of continued recession, what is surprising is how little impact events such as the Italian elections and the Cyprus bailout have had on markets. This reflects the success of policy measures - especially the backstop provided by the ECB - in stabilizing country and bank funding and the cautious stance of market positioning.

In Japan, with the government's commitment to ease monetary policy, the Bank of Japan appears set to join the Fed in applying extraordinary monetary stimulus. The Global Outlook now expects Japan to be the one developed economy showing truly robust growth this year.

Other recommendations in Barclays' Global Outlook include:

· Prefer developed market over emerging market equities

· Maintain equity exposure in both the US and Japan; UK stocks are appealing; Spanish equities look cheap

· In fixed income, there are probably more opportunities in emerging markets than in the developed markets, where yields are already at rock-bottom levels

· Look for returns in EM using asset selection based on idiosyncratic factors such as divergences in monetary and FX policy across countries

· In commodities and credit, correlations have fallen dramatically reducing opportunities for broad directional trades
· Expect further weakening in the yen and the British pound

Barclays' Global Outlook research report, published quarterly, provides an assessment of all major economies and outlines the likely implications for global financial markets, including commodities, credit, economics, emerging markets, equities, fixed income and foreign exchange.

Klemm Was 'Quite Open' About Relationship: Former Student to ABC7 Patch Wheaton, IL --

A former Wheaton North High School student told ABC7 News that the teacher charged with sexual assault of a teen this week was "quite open" about stepping down from his role as the speech team coach in 2011 because he had "too close of a relationship" with another student.

Edwin Klemm, 43, was charged earlier this week with 11 counts of criminal sexual assault of a teen, after he had sexual encounters with a former student in a classroom, a parking garage in Chicago and at his home, prosecutors said.

The relationship between Klemm and the student first came to light after her parents found a love letter from him to their daughter, prosecutors said. The relationship began in February 2011 when the student was 16. Prosecutors said the student told Klemm that the relationship was wrong and broke it off in December 2011.

District 200 spokesman Erica Loiacono said Thursday that authorities informed the district of Klemm's charges Tuesday night and provided additional details Wednesday morning.

She said Klemm submitted his letter of resignation from his role as the speech team coach in May 2011, but she would not comment on the reason for his resignation.

Loiacono said if suspicions are brought to school authorities, the school principal is supposed to conduct an investigation and determine whether to report the issue to authorities or the district's human resources department.

Another student told ABC7 News Klemm was one of the nicest teachers at Wheaton North. See Klemm in the student video above.

Klemm is being held at DuPage County Jail on $600,000 bail, with 10 percent needed to apply as bond.

AMC Courthouse’s cushy recliners reflect the future of movie theaters

Most companies can only dream of this kind of word-of-mouth marketing: “Best movie theater ever,” Erica Austin, 24, said to her companion as they passed AMC Courthouse Plaza 8 recently, headed for the Metro. ¶ What sounds like hyperbole has echoed across the Twitterverse and Yelp since the Arlington movie house rolled out renovations in October. The upgrades include extravagantly oversize red chairs that transform into recliners with footrests at the touch of a button. There’s no need to elbow for armrest space, which is more than sufficient. And comfort gets a boost from convenience, especially for the notoriously tardy. Whether buying tickets online or in person, filmgoers select seats ahead of time, rendering needless early arrivals or sprawling jackets across a row for savesies. ¶ While multiplexes across the nation are beginning to unveil similar concepts, the Arlington theater is among the first in the Washington region to invite patrons to lie back and enjoy luxury amenities beyond the feature presentation. The effort seems to indicate that theaters are getting a crash course in marketing after decades of essentially relying on studios to attract customers.
